5 Branding Lessons from the ‘Brand of the Year’ World Branding Awards …

When we talk about successful brands, it’s easy to focus on what we can see: the logo, packaging, or social media presence. Yet the brands that truly stand out in consumers’ minds are remembered for something far less tangible: the way they make people feel.

Every year, the World Branding Awards recognises brands that have earned a special place in the hearts of consumers. While these winners come from different industries, markets, and cultures, they share a common characteristic: they understand that branding is about people.

As anticipation builds for the World Branding Awards 2026 ceremony this November, it is worth reflecting on some of the core principles that continue to distinguish exceptional brands from the rest.

1. Consistency creates comfort

Consumers live in a world of constant changes, thus, brands that offer familiarity often become anchors amid uncertainty.

Take IKEA, a long-time global branding success story. Whether customers walk into a store in London, New York, or Dubai, they know what to expect: Scandinavian-inspired design, functional products, affordability, and a distinctive customer experience.

As Ingka Group CEO Juvencio Maeztu noted: “We cannot over-react, especially in pricing. We need to keep some kind of consistency.”

The quote speaks to a broader branding truth. Strong brands don’t reinvent themselves every year, instead they evolve while preserving the qualities that earned their customers’ trust in the first place. For consumers, consistency creates confidence. It reassures them that the experience they loved yesterday will still be there tomorrow.

Lesson: Recognition is built through repetition, but trust is built through consistency.

2. Customer experience is a brand’s most honest advertisement

For many brands, customer experience begins when someone walks into a store or when they are browsing the online store. For others, the experience starts much earlier, at the breakfast table or in the daily routines that become part of people’s lives.

Take Lurpak for example, the brand has become a staple in many households, not because it shouts the loudest, but because it consistently delivers on expectations. Whether used by professional chefs or home cooks, the brand has positioned itself as an enabler of great cooking experiences. Campaign tagline such as “Good Food Deserves Lurpak” reinforce a simple promise: helping consumers create enjoyable moments around food. The brand is embodying the tagline.

Lesson: Trust is often built not through marketing claims, but through everyday experiences that consistently meet expectations.

3. Purpose Resonates Because People Seek Meaning

Modern consumers are increasingly interested in what a brand stands for, not just what it sells.

Yakult is a compelling example. Since its founding, the brand has been driven by a mission that extends beyond selling probiotic drinks. Rooted in the philosophy of its founder, Dr. Minoru Shirota, Yakult was established with the belief that preventive healthcare should be accessible to everyone. This commitment to promoting gut health and wellbeing has shaped not only its products but also its consumer education initiatives and community outreach programmes around the world.

Its purpose is reflected in the company’s philosophy:

“We contribute to the health and happiness of people around the world through pursuit of excellence in life science in general and our research and experience in microorganisms in particular.”

By consistently aligning its actions with this mission, Yakult has built trust that extends far beyond its products. Its success demonstrates that purpose is most powerful when it is embedded in the business, not just its marketing.

The lesson: When people believe in a brand’s purpose, they become more than customers; they become advocates.

4. Great Stories Help Consumers See Themselves

The most effective brand stories are not about products. They are about relationships.

For Whiskas, that relationship is the bond between cats and their owners. Its recent campaigns, such as ‘Trust the Purr’, are rooted in listening closely to pet owners and creating stories that reflect real-life experiences. Rather than making the brand the hero, Whiskas places cats and their owners at the centre of the narrative.

Katie Griffiths, Global Brand VP, WHISKAS®, explains: “With ‘Trust the Purr’, we wanted to celebrate our brand renovation in a way only the WHISKAS® brand can – by letting cats lead the story! Real-life social taste tests put cats at the centre of the creative campaign, our boldest proof that cat preference comes first. Behind the campaign are five years of science-backed product transformation, delivering a recipe that 9 out of 10 cats love.”

That insight explains why Whiskas’ storytelling resonates. The brand understands that cat owners are not merely purchasing pet food; they are caring for a family member. By celebrating the joy, companionship, and unique personalities of cats, Whiskas transforms a functional product into an emotionally meaningful experience.

Lesson: The most memorable brands tell stories that reflect their customers’ lives, values, and emotional connections.

5. Relevance Requires Continuous Evolution

Few brands demonstrate the power of evolution quite like Cadbury. For more than a century, Cadbury has remained a familiar presence in households around the world. Yet its longevity has not come from standing still.

Cadbury’s enduring strength also comes from the breadth of its brand portfolio and its ability to remain relevant across multiple audiences, and generations. While Cadbury Dairy Milk sits at the heart of the business and has become deeply embedded in British culture, the company’s success extends far beyond a single product or campaign.

Through a combination of innovation, seasonal activations, purpose-led initiatives, and emotionally resonant storytelling, Cadbury has continued to build one of the world’s most recognisable and valuable confectionery brands.

As Colin O’Toole, Equity Lead at Cadbury, has noted, Dairy Milk has become part of the fabric of the nation. Still, its leadership position has been built on a much broader portfolio of campaigns and experiences that continually reinforce its connection with consumers.

This balance between heritage and innovation is what allows iconic brands to endure. Consumers appreciate familiarity, but they also expect brands to innovate alongside them. The challenge lies in adapting without losing the essence that made people fall in love with the brand in the first place.

Lesson: The strongest brands embrace change without abandoning their identity, proving that evolution and authenticity can go hand in hand.

Recognising Excellence in Branding

The brands recognised by the World Branding Awards remind us that successful branding is not solely about visibility or market share. At its heart, branding is about building meaningful relationships, grounded in trust, understanding, and shared values.

As Richard Rowles, Global Chairman of the World Branding Forum, explains:

“The World Branding Awards goes beyond celebrating success; we spotlight the unwavering effort, vision, and emotional resonance behind it. Every brand is honoured on a global pedestal, recognised not just for what it sells, but for what it stands for.”

That philosophy is reflected in the world’s most admired brands. Their achievements are not defined only by commercial success, but by the trust, loyalty, and affinity they have cultivated over time

As the global branding community prepares for the Brand of the Year World Branding Awards 2026 ceremony this November, attention will once again turn to the brands that have succeeded in creating those connections. The winners will undoubtedly offer fresh perspectives on how brands can remain relevant in an ever-changing marketplace while continuing to earn consumer confidence.
