What to Consider When Reviewing Creator Content – Find Your Influence

By: Chelsea Goodson

In today’s influencer marketing landscape, authenticity isn’t just a buzzword: it’s the backbone of trust, connection, and performance. As audiences have become savvier, they can instantly tell when content feels forced, scripted, or overly branded. The truth? Authenticity wins every time. What does authenticity actually look like in influencer marketing, though, and how can brands ensure it shines through when reviewing and approving creator content?

Let’s break it down.

Remember Why You Chose That Creator

The creator’s audience doesn’t just follow them for the products they promote, they follow them for their voice, personality, and perspective. When brands step in and try to control too much of that creative direction, the content can start to lose what made it special in the first place.

When reviewing creator submissions, ask yourself:

  • Does this sound like the creator’s usual tone and style?
  • Would their followers recognize this as something they’d naturally post?
  • Does the content feel like a fit — not a forced ad?
Authenticity starts with trust — both in the influencer’s voice and in the brand’s willingness to let that voice shine.

Focus on Storytelling, Not Scripts
The best influencer content doesn’t sound like a commercial. It tells a story.
Maybe it’s a morning routine, a behind-the-scenes look, or a heartfelt review that connects to a personal experience. The key is relatability.

When deciding what content to move forward with, look for:

  • Genuine storytelling over polished sales copy
  • Visuals that feel lived-in and real, not overly produced
  • Emotion — joy, humor, excitement, nostalgia — something that connects on a human level

Audiences respond to stories, not slogans.

Keep Messaging Simple and Natural
It’s important that influencers communicate your brand’s key message, but not at the cost of sounding robotic or repetitive. If every creator’s post looks or sounds the same, authenticity goes out the window.

Instead:

  • Share clear talking points, not rigid scripts
  • Encourage creators to say things in their own words
  • Let them share how your product fits into their real life
When influencers speak like themselves, their message — and your brand — lands better.

Look Beyond Perfect Aesthetics
Of course, high-quality visuals matter. But in influencer marketing, perfection isn’t the goal — connection is. Don’t automatically reject content that feels a little “imperfect.” A phone-shot video, unfiltered photo, or casual voiceover can often perform better than a glossy, studio-style post.

Ask yourself:

  • Does this feel authentic to the influencer’s usual content?
  • Would I engage with this as a follower?
  • Does it make me believe the message?

Sometimes, the most authentic post is the one that feels most real — not the most polished.

Respect the Creator–Audience Relationship
Influencers know their audiences best. They understand what resonates, what converts, and what feels genuine.

When reviewing content, try to see it through that lens — not just a brand lens.

  • Does this content serve the influencer’s audience?
  • Is it something their followers will appreciate, trust and respond to?
  • Does it feel like an extension of their brand and yours?
Authentic collaborations live at the intersection of the creator’s world and your brand’s story.

Build Partnerships, Not One-Off Posts
Long-term partnerships breed authenticity. The more time creators spend engaging with your brand, the more naturally your product integrates into their life and content.

When you review creator content, think beyond a single post:

  • Could this creator grow with your brand?
  • Does their content reflect shared values and ongoing potential?
That consistency — both in tone and relationship — builds real credibility with audiences.

The Bottom Line
Authenticity isn’t about checking boxes. It’s about trusting creators to do what they do best: connect with their communities.

When reviewing influencer content, look for what feels real, relatable and true to the creator’s voice. Those are the posts that make people stop scrolling, listen, and believe.

At Find Your Influence, we’ve seen firsthand how authenticity drives results, because when creators are empowered to tell their stories their way, brands win.
