December is a busy month with lots of things to look forward to as the holidays draw near, but Kindle fans have one more reason to be excited: free Kindle e-books.

Every month, Amazon gives Prime members free Kindle e-books through its First Reads program. The service, which many people overlook, offers a curated selection of new Kindle titles across multiple genres, refreshed on the first of each month. As a Prime member this December, you can claim one free Kindle e-book from the First Reads lineup, plus a bonus short read, giving you two free titles to enjoy.

So if you’re looking for something new to read on your Kindle over Christmas or New Year’s, and like free books, then Amazon’s First Reads program has got you covered. Plus, once you claim the books, they’re yours to keep.

The biggest caveat here is that you do need to be an Amazon Prime member to get the free books, which costs $15 a month or $139 annually. If you’re not a Prime member, you can still look at all the books, but it will cost you $2 to select one, instead of being free, which isn’t a bad deal either. You can check out Amazon’s First Read Program and Amazon Prime below.

You have until December 31 to claim your free books

For December, Amazon is offering seven different titles through First Reads, and you can choose one to receive and read for free. Some of this month’s options include suspense, fantasy, and romance titles.

Here are all the books available through Amazon’s First Reads program for December:

  • Her Beautiful Life (Genre: Domestic Suspense)
  • Behind These Four Walls (Genre: Suspense)
  • Tea Alchemy (Genre: Fantasy)
  • The Heart of Everything (Book Club Fiction)
  • The Water Lies (Genre: Thriller)
  • Thirty, Flirty, and Forever Alone (Genre: Romance)
  • The Flightless Birds of New Hope (Genre: Book Club Fiction)

To claim your free e-book, head to the First Reads page on Amazon’s site, select the title you want, then click “Read now for $0.00” on the Amazon store page. It will then be added to your Kindle library.

In addition to being able to choose one of the titles listed above to get for free as a Prime member, you can also claim this month’s bonus short read, which is The Last Father-Daughter Dance: A Short Story, by Lisa Wingate, a New York Times bestselling author. Also, to promote its new Christmas movie “Oh. What. Fun.,” on Prime Video, Amazon is also giving away the book that inspired the film for free to Prime members, so you can actually get three free Kindle books in total this month if you include that one as well.

While Prime is best known for perks like fast, free shipping and Prime Video, the First Reads program is an underrated gem that more people should take advantage of. The current titles are available until December 31, and starting January 1, First Reads will refresh with a new selection, giving you another chance to snag free books.
