ABC News’ Good Morning America has ascended to the top spot, snapping NBC News’ Today’s five-week win streak in total viewers during the first week of December.
However, the battle for first place was a tightly contested matchup, with only 33,000 total viewers separating the two morning shows. Meanwhile, the two broadcasts were separated by 56,000 viewers in the demo.
This week, all morning shows finished above 2 million total viewers, with CBS Mornings being the only one to see gains in both measured categories.
According to national live+same-day big data plus program ratings from Nielsen, GMA averaged 2.893 million total viewers and 483,000 viewers in the A25-54 demo for the week of December 1. Compared to the previous week, ABC News’ morning show was down by -1% in total viewers but up by +3% in the demo. Looking at its performance against the same week in 2024, as previously measured by Nielsen panel data (Dec. 2), GMA was up by +6% in total viewers and +2% in the demo.
Today remained in first place in the demo but fell to second place in total viewership, with 539,000 and 2.860 million viewers, respectively, for the just-concluded week. The broadcast was down -17% in total viewers and -33% in the demo compared to the previous week, which received a significant boost because of its Thanksgiving Day Macy’s Parade coverage. Looking at how it performed during the same week in 2024, as previously measured by Nielsen panel data, Today was up by +2% in total viewers but down by -20% in the demo.
CBS Mornings had 2.076 million total viewers and 363,000 viewers in the A25-54 demo. Compared to the previous week, CBS News’ morning show was up by +6% in total viewers and +13% in the A25-54 demo—the only morning show with gains in both measured categories. During the same period in 2024, as previously measured by Nielsen panel data, CBS Mornings experienced a -1% decline in total viewers and a -11% decline in the demo.
