Ralph Lauren Honours Navajo Heritage with New Capsule

On Tuesday, October 29, Ralph Lauren introduced the second instalment of its Artist in Residence program, a capsule collection designed in collaboration with Diné (Navajo) artist Zefren-M.

The Double RL x Zefren-M capsule collection honours Navajo heritage and Ralph Lauren’s iconic American craftsmanship, particularly Zefren-M’s innovative approach to weaving.

The capsule collection showcases core Double RL silhouettes, such as the work shirt, hand-knit shawl cardigan, accessories, and a floor rug. The breathtaking landscapes and artistic traditions of the Navajo Nation inspire the designs. Additionally, Zefren-M created a series of stamped conchos featuring various Spider Woman motifs, paying tribute to the revered figure in Navajo weaving culture.

Inaugurated in December 2023 with the Polo Ralph Lauren x Naiomi Glasses collection, Ralph Lauren’s Artist in Residence program is committed to authentically representing American heritage through collaborative partnerships with artists whose craftsmanship has influenced the brand’s iconic designs.

“Ralph Lauren has always been driven by a true love for heritage, which continues to inspire our designs,” said Sasha Kelly, Head of Design with Intent at Ralph Lauren Corporation.

“Our Artist in Residence program allows us to enhance authenticity through collaboration – it enriches the stories we can share and enables us to support and elevate cultural traditions.”

Zefren-M, a celebrated multidisciplinary artist, historian, and LGBTQIA+ advocate from the Navajo Nation, fuses traditional Navajo weaving with contemporary design to honour their Diné heritage.

“I have always drawn inspiration from the past, which I incorporate into my art and personal style,” said Zefren-M. “Our collaboration with the Double RL team allowed us to create a unique expression of our shared appreciation for heritage and tradition while paying homage to the narratives of the Navajo people.”

The capsule collection’s launch coincides with a short film featuring Zefren-M, offering insights into the inspiration behind the collection, filmed in their homeland in the Four Corners region of New Mexico.

The Double RL x Zefren-M collection will be available in select Ralph Lauren and Double RL stores across North America, Europe, and Asia beginning November 7. Online availability will commence on November 14 in North America and Europe and November 18 in China and Japan.
