Chow Tai Fook introduces “Chinese Couture” in Shanghai, a high jewellery collection that channels the grandeur of ancient Chinese dress into contemporary artistry.

Established in 1929, Chow Tai Fook has long been celebrated for translating Eastern aesthetics into a modern design language. After last year’s debut of Timeless Harmony, its first high jewellery collection inspired by Chinese culture, the maison now turns to the defining elements of traditional dress: silk threads, cords, ribbons, frog buttons, and cloud collars. Presented with exceptional gold pieces and rare gemstones, the showcase highlights the dialogue between cultural heritage and artistic innovation.

At the helm of the collection is Nicholas Lieou, Chow Tai Fook’s Creative Director of High Jewellery. Born in Hong Kong and trained in London and New York, Lieou is an alumnus of Central Saint Martins, the Royal College of Art, and FIT. His global perspective yields a design language that unites Eastern aesthetics with Western refinement. Anchored in his philosophy of “simplicity over complexity,” Lieou brings a modern clarity to high jewellery while honouring its cultural roots.

Inspired by the techniques of traditional Chinese dress, the collection elevates motifs such as silk cords, ribbons, frog buttons, and cloud collars into sculptural adornments. Jade, treasured across Chinese history, is combined with precious gemstones to create jewellery that bridges cultural symbolism and modern design.

Highlighting the collection is a fresh take on the frog button, a signature element of Chinese clothing. Once a practical closure, it also symbolised balance and unity in Eastern philosophy. The jewellery designs capture this essence by positioning a gemstone within two gold arcs, echoing the elegance of garment fastenings. The interplay of form and meaning creates pieces where craftsmanship itself is elevated to ornament.

As part of the exhibition, Chow Tai Fook hosted a forum moderated by Catherine Yu, General Manager of High Jewellery. The panel brought together Nicholas Lieou, photographer Feng Hai, architect Zhuang Ziyu, and fashion designer Chen Yayi for a dialogue on craftsmanship, creativity, and the transformation of Eastern aesthetics in contemporary design.

More than an exhibition, Chinese Couture is a statement of intent. Chow Tai Fook continues to weave the threads of cultural legacy into contemporary design, proving that high jewellery can serve as both ornament and narrative. By pairing jade and rare gemstones with motifs drawn from traditional dress, the maison bridges centuries of artistry with today’s sensibilities. In doing so, it invites audiences to see heritage not as static history, but as a living source of inspiration—one that resonates across cultures and generations.
