If there’s one movie genre I’ve really grown to love over the years, it’s Westerns. I grew up mostly watching sci-fi, fantasy, and war movies, so I wasn’t exposed to many classic Westerns. But thanks to free streaming services, I’ve finally had the chance to discover what the genre has to offer. As it turns out, it’s home to some of the greatest movies ever made, along with iconic performances from legendary actors like Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, Charles Bronson, and Steve McQueen.

Whether you’re new to Westerns or a longtime fan looking to revisit some classics, here are some of the best Western movies you can stream for free right now. From high-stakes shootouts and lawless frontier towns to unforgettable showdowns, these films showcase everything that makes the genre so timeless.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

One of John Wayne’s best Western films

The first Western I want to put in the spotlight is The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Directed by John Ford and released in 1962, the film stars James Stewart as Ransom “Ranse” Stoddard, a tough but idealistic lawyer who arrives in a small frontier town and finds himself standing up to a ruthless outlaw, Liberty Valance.

As the story unfolds, it explores how legends are made in the Wild West and why the truth doesn’t always survive. The legendary John Wayne also stars as Tom Doniphon, a rancher who comes to Stoddard’s rescue, but at an immense personal cost.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is now streaming for free on Tubi after being added to the service as part of its July wave of more than 100 new movies. The film is also available in 4K UHD Blu-ray from Amazon if you’d prefer to add it to your physical movie collection.

A Fistful of Dollars

Clint Eastwood steps into the role of a Man with No Name

A Fistful of Dollars was the first Western I ever watched, and it also introduced me to Clint Eastwood. It’s the first film in Sergio Leone’s legendary Dollars Trilogy, followed by For a Few Dollars More (1965) and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966). If you’re looking for the perfect entry point into the Western genre, this is it.

Directed by Sergio Leone and released in 1964, A Fistful of Dollars stars Eastwood as the Man with No Name, a cunning drifter who arrives in a small border town caught in the middle of a bitter feud between two rival crime families. He cleverly plays both sides against each other for profit, but as the violence escalates, he ultimately puts himself at risk to protect an innocent family and deliver justice.

A Fistful of Dollars is now streaming for free on Pluto TV, making it easy to experience one of the greatest Westerns ever made. If you’d rather own it, you can also pick up the 4K UHD Blu-ray from Amazon.

Once Upon a Time in the West

Another classic Western from director Sergio Leone

The next Western comes from the legendary Sergio Leone once again, but this time, instead of Clint Eastwood, the lead role goes to Charles Bronson, best known for starring in classics like The Great Escape and The Magnificent Seven.

Released in 1968, Once Upon a Time in the West stars Bronson as a mysterious harmonica-playing drifter known only as Harmonica. After arriving in a growing frontier town, he joins forces with the outlaw Cheyenne (Jason Robards) to protect a widow whose valuable land has made her the target of the ruthless railroad assassin Frank. Featuring one of the greatest final showdowns in Western history, an unforgettable score by Ennio Morricone, and Leone at the top of his game, it’s widely regarded as one of the greatest Western movies ever made.

Once Upon a Time in the West was recently added to Pluto TV as part of a wave of more than 250 free movies celebrating America’s 250th birthday. The film was also released on 4K UHD Blu-ray, available on Amazon.

The Magnificent Seven (1960)

You’ll easily get the theme for this Western stuck in your head

One of my all-time favorite Westerns is The Magnificent Seven (1960). Although it was remade in 2016, I still think the original is the best way to experience the story. Every time I hear Elmer Bernstein’s iconic score, I can’t help but want to watch the movie again.

Directed by John Sturges, The Magnificent Seven follows the story of a small Mexican village repeatedly raided by a brutal gang of bandits led by the leader, Calvera, leaving the villagers helpless and frightened. In an effort to survive and fight back, the village seeks out and hires seven gunslingers not only to protect them but also to train them to defend their village.

The Magnificent Seven (1960) is available to stream for free on Plex and features a star-studded ensemble cast, including Steve McQueen as Vin Tanner, Yul Brynner as Chris Adams, Charles Bronson as Bernardo O’Reilly, Eli Wallach as Calvera, and James Coburn as Britt. The film is also available on 4K UHD Blu-ray if you want to add it to your collection.

Hang ‘Em High

Another thrilling Western starring Clint Eastwood

Last but not least is Hang ‘Em High, another Western starring Clint Eastwood. This time, though, instead of playing the iconic Man with No Name from Sergio Leone’s legendary Dollars Trilogy, he takes on the role of Jedediah Cooper.

Directed by Ted Post and released in 1968, Hang ‘Em High follows Cooper after he survives a wrongful lynching and becomes a US Marshal determined to bring those responsible to justice. It’s a much different role for Eastwood than the one that made him a Western icon, but it’s just as compelling to watch.

Hang ‘Em High is available to stream for free on Pluto TV right now, making it an easy recommendation if you want to see Eastwood in a different kind of frontier story. As with many classic westerns, it’s also been released on 4K UHD Blu-ray if you’d rather own it.
