Sainsbury’s has decided to sell Argos for £120m as the supermarket chain aims to focus on its core food business, BBC News reported.

Sainsbury’s said it would be business as usual for customers, staff, and suppliers as Argos will continue to operate in Sainsbury’s shops, sell Habitat products, and offer Nectar points.

Confidence in the Future of High Street Retailer

According to the report, the buyer is Swift Partners, a company created to buy the brand, and includes former Co-operative Group boss Richard Pennycook.

There are Argos 667 shops across the UK, with 201 operating as standalone stores and 466 operating within Sainsbury’s. It also has more than 450 collection points.

While questions have been raised about how well the retailer fits within Sainsbury’s wider grocery-focused business, Swift Partners appears confident about its future. Pennycook said the firm sees “real opportunities” to invest in Argos and build on the progress it has already made, signalling a commitment to growing the business rather than scaling it back. Although the proposed deal, expected to be completed in February next year, is likely to create short-term uncertainty for staff and customers, the scale of Argos’s network and the buyer’s positive outlook suggest confidence in the brand’s long-term potential.

Analysts Highlight Concerns Despite Sainsbury’s Growth

In 2016, Sainsbury’s bought Argos as well as Homebase, Habitat, and all the other retail brands owned by Home Retail Group for £1.4bn.

The comments from industry analysts, recent sales figures, and union representatives collectively paint a mixed picture of Argos’s position within Sainsbury’s. Retail analyst Clive Black argues that Argos has never been fully aligned with Sainsbury’s core grocery operations, suggesting that any attempt to sell the retailer would likely be complex and drawn out.

His assessment is reinforced by Argos’s weaker financial performance, with sales falling 0.5% in the latest quarter despite Sainsbury’s overall sales increasing by 3.1%, indicating that the business has not kept pace with the wider group.

Usdaw has highlighted the potential uncertainty facing employees following the announcement, while welcoming Swift’s commitment to maintaining Argos’s existing operating model, including store-in-store locations, standalone branches, and local fulfilment centres.

Together, these perspectives suggest that while Argos remains an important part of Sainsbury’s retail network, questions persist over its strategic fit and long-term future within the group.
