GU Bets on Designer Appeal for $18 Denim

Fast Retailing’s lower‑priced brand GU is turning to a luxury fashion veteran in hopes of elevating $18 denim to worldwide appeal.

Known in Japan for its blend of fashion‑forward sensibility and affordability, GU has taken a decisive step toward redefining its image. The retailer introduced its inaugural collection under the creative direction of Francesco Risso, who previously led Marni, one of Italy’s most influential luxury houses. With Risso’s distinctive vision, GU aims to elevate its offerings beyond fast fashion, using this collaboration as a springboard to establish a stronger global presence and carve out its own identity apart from Uniqlo.

Rolling out in Japanese stores from late July, GU’s new collection embraces six design directions minimalist, classic, playful, and sporty among them, infused with bright hues and lively patterns. At the heart of the offering is denim priced at just ¥2,990 ($18), a full ¥2,000 below Uniqlo’s comparable jeans, highlighting GU’s strategy to deliver fashion‑forward looks at a fraction of the cost.

Risso’s new role at GU reflects a broader fashion dynamic in which mass‑market retailers enlist high‑end creative talent to capture attention and elevate their offerings. Achim Berg, founder of FashionSights and ex‑head of McKinsey’s apparel and luxury practice, observes that such partnerships are increasingly used to build stronger brand identities and generate international buzz.

“It’s a strategy to generate excitement for the offering,” he observed. “We’re seeing greater crossover between luxury houses, high‑end fashion, and mass‑market players.”

Collaborations between mass‑market retailers and luxury designers are no longer the exception they’re the rule. Zara has just announced a two‑year tie‑up with John Galliano, once Dior’s creative director. Uniqlo, too, has benefited from years of partnerships with high‑fashion figures, and today its creative direction is led by Clare Waight Keller, whose résumé includes Chloé and Givenchy. These alliances highlight how accessible fashion brands are weaving high‑end credibility into their DNA.

Tadashi Yanai, the billionaire founder of Fast Retailing, has long argued that GU could one day match Uniqlo’s success. His ambition is reflected in a ¥1 trillion annual revenue goal for the brand. For now, GU will debut Risso’s designs domestically in Japan, using the launch as a testing ground before rolling them out globally.

The effort to reposition GU follows a history of mixed results. Despite its ambitions, the brand’s scale is still modest, and CFO Takeshi Okazaki recently admitted that past collections struggled to resonate with younger consumers.

Last year, GU reported a 9.5% drop in operating profit, with revenue at ¥331 billion, just a fraction of Uniqlo’s scale. The brand’s international ambitions have slowed, following the launch of its SoHo flagship in New York in 2024, though it continues to operate stores across China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

Uniqlo’s rise has been anchored in functional innovations like Heattech and Airism that appeal to consumers everywhere. GU, however, leans on style, a strategy that carries more uncertainty since fashion preferences shift dramatically from one market to another.

The gamble for Fast Retailing is that Risso’s name recognition and luxury pedigree can help GU stand out internationally. As FashionSights’ Achim Berg points out, collaborations of this kind typically allow brands to command higher prices.

For GU, the collaboration with Risso is more than a seasonal collection; it’s a statement of intent. By blending high‑fashion credibility with accessible pricing, the brand is positioning itself to capture new audiences worldwide. The question now is whether GU can translate this bold experiment into lasting global recognition.
