Meta is working on a feature that will let users manage the storage of each chat from the chat info screen. Here are the details.
Per-chat storage management will be a welcome addition for users with limited storage space
As spotted by WABetaInfo, a recent WhatsApp beta build on TestFlight added a new “Manage Storage” option to the chat info page.
This section shows how much space that specific conversation occupies on the user’s device, and lets them browse a gallery view that details how much storage each image, video, document, and other file in that chat uses.
This feature will work similarly to the existing storage management tool found under Settings > Storage and Data > Manage Storage, which until now was the only way to manage storage in the app.
By adding per-chat granularity, WhatsApp will make it easier to pinpoint which files take up the most space in each conversation, without the clutter of browsing every file from every conversation in one place (which, in turn, can also be helpful depending on the user’s specific needs).
Interestingly, WhatsApp already includes a “Media, Links, and Docs” option within each chat, which opens a gallery of shared files. However, it doesn’t show how much storage each one occupies.
There’s no word yet on when the feature will roll out, but we’ll keep an eye on it and report back once it’s live.
